In June 2026, BTL Industries announced that the Dallas Cowboys had incorporated EMSculpt NEO® into the team’s athlete recovery, rehabilitation, and conditioning program. The announcement was notable less for the endorsement than for the setting. A device most patients associate with body contouring had been placed in a professional training room, where the measure of success is whether an athlete can return to full function on schedule. That application says something specific about what the technology does at the tissue level, and it is the same mechanism at work when the device is used in a longevity practice.

BTL’s announcement describes the collaboration as supporting player rehabilitation, recovery, strength, and performance across the demands of a professional football season. The team’s associate athletic trainer and director of rehabilitation characterized the technology as stimulating and strengthening muscle in a way that differs from conventional methods.

That distinction is the substance of the story. Voluntary exercise is limited by the nervous system, which restricts how many motor units fire at once as a protective measure. EMSculpt NEO bypasses that limit. For an athlete rebuilding after injury, the value is the ability to load a muscle group meaningfully without loading the joint, the tendon, or the surgical site.

The same problem appears constantly outside of professional sport. Protecting Muscle During Medically Supervised Weight Loss

While there are multiple studies linking greater muscle mass to lower mortality and longer lifespan, the most commonly cited landmark study is “Muscle Mass Index as a Predictor of Longevity in Older Adults,” by Srikanthan and Karlamangla, published in the American Journal of Medicine in 2014. The study drew on NHANES III data covering 3,659 older adults. After adjusting for central obesity and other covariates, all-cause mortality ran approximately 20 percent lower in the highest quartile of muscle mass index than in the lowest, with an adjusted hazard ratio of 0.80 (95% CI 0.66 to 0.97).

Muscle tissue is denser and more metabolically active than fat, which means that building it makes subsequent fat loss more efficient. Dr. Martin raises this in the context of GLP-1 medications, where rapid weight reduction carries a recognized risk of losing lean mass alongside fat, with downstream concerns including sarcopenia and reduced bone density.

His approach pairs EMSculpt NEO sessions with weekly GLP-1 injections, supported by adequate protein and peptide intake, so that muscle density is maintained through the weight loss period rather than recovered afterward.

What Treatment Involves at BODYWELLE
